Four doors, two different stories

Four doors can make an old pickup look ready to carry the whole crew. In Chevrolet’s Canadian brochure for 1976, though, counting the doors only gets you so far.

On page 3, the Chevy 3+3 Crew Cab and Chevy Bonus Cab each get a short description. Both have four doors. What Chevrolet promises behind those doors is where their stories part company.

The Crew Cab makes room for six people. Two full-width, foam-cushioned seats accommodate three in front and three in back. The name “3+3” tells that part of the story neatly.

The Bonus Cab description takes a different direction. It names room for three passengers and nearly 56 cubic feet of lockable load space inside. Full-door access from either side makes that space available for loading and unloading. The attraction in this paragraph is the room for a load inside the cab, rather than room for another three people.

That is a useful distinction to remember when an old advertisement or a family photograph leaves you with little more than “four-door Chevrolet.” The brochure gives you two names to investigate, and two different descriptions to compare with the truck’s own paperwork.

The doors catch your eye. The names and the small paragraphs beneath them help you understand what Chevrolet was offering.

Scope note: This is a Canadian-publication example, not a specification for every market or every Oshawa-built truck. The descriptions do not establish a surviving truck’s original configuration. “Nearly 56 cubic feet” is approximate interior volume, not payload or present-day loading advice. The Bonus Cab paragraph does not specify its seat arrangement. No verified public link to this edition is available with the source citation.
