Documenting surviving trucks
Building the Survivor Record
A research-led registry of surviving 1976 Chevrolet and GMC trucks claimed or documented as Spirit of ’76 examples. The published records below separate factory-listed equipment, photographed Spirit-associated features and seller claims. Other research leads remain private while their evidence and publication permissions are reviewed.
What GM documentation establishes
GM’s own later service-parts literature explicitly recognizes Spirit of ’76. Catalog 51, effective February 1983, lists right-hand door-panel assembly 351364 for a 1976 two-door C/K application with knit-vinyl seats and describes its use on the Spirit of 76 limited edition, with 26E blue-knit seating and white door trim. A separate entry lists emblem 367290 for a 1976 two-door C/K application with 26E trim, associating the emblem with Bonanza, white door panels and Spirit of 76.
These entries establish that GM documented Spirit-related service applications. They do not supply a complete 1976 ordering specification, unique Spirit RPO, original installation history, exterior-graphics supplier or production total. The catalog also lists panel 351364 in other applications on the preceding page, so that part number alone is not a Spirit identifier.

What 26E and NDW1 establish
Chevrolet’s August 29, 1975 regular-cab chart lists NDW1 in the Z62 Scottsdale knit-vinyl bench-seat row under Blue/White, with trim type E defined as striped knit vinyl. GMC’s 1976 color-and-trim album, p. 33, separately lists striped-knit vinyl for Sierra Grande two-door pickups and two-door 1500–3500 cab models, with a sample labeled “Red, White and Blue.” The leaf prints no Spirit of ’76 or Royal Sierra name or trim code; the album is a general guide. The later Catalog 51 chart places NDW1 under Red-White-Blue/26 in the corresponding Z62 Scottsdale/Sierra Grande regular-cab row. Preserve the wording and scope of each source. A trim-code match alone does not authenticate a truck as Spirit of ’76.

Published survivor records
- CKL146S165071 — Chevrolet K10: photographed VIN-matched SPID lists YG8 Bonanza Package C, Z62 and 26E; matched galleries show Spirit-pattern upholstery, a door-panel shield and patriotic exterior graphics. The sources do not establish who supplied or installed every feature.
- CCL146S166066 — Chevrolet C10 longbed: photographed SPID and certification label establish the VIN, with YG8, Z62 and 26E recorded. Photographs show Spirit door-panel shields; original installation and later paint history remain separate questions. The seller’s numbered-production story is unverified.
- CCL146S183728 — Chevrolet C10 shortbed: photographed VIN-matched SPID lists YG8, Z62 and 26E, while the gallery records a striped bench and ’76 door-panel emblem. These are documented equipment and observed features, not proof of a separate Spirit ordering code.
The entries above are selected documented examples, not a production census. Repeated listings of the same VIN count as one vehicle; claims about total production or remaining survivors require independent evidence.
What this registry does
The registry preserves available evidence, compares production patterns, and helps owners and researchers distinguish documented trucks from later recreations. A truck is never classified from decals, badges, or a similar color combination alone.
Each record is evaluated from the evidence available at the time. Classifications can change when stronger documents, photographs, or contradictory records surface.
Evidence we examine
- VIN and certification labels
- SPID labels and build sheets
- Invoices and dealer records
- Factory literature and period advertising
- Detailed photographs and owner history
Each finding gets a clear status
The same six-status standard is used for individual claims across RareTruckInfo research.
Verified
Supported by direct, reliable evidence.
Probable
Strongly supported, with a remaining gap.
Unverified
Claim recorded, but not yet supported.
Incorrect
Contradicted by stronger evidence.
Superseded
Replaced by a better-supported conclusion.
Not Assessable
Available material cannot support a judgment.
