OUR RESEARCH STANDARD
Evidence first. Conclusions second.
RareTruckInfo documents unusual Chevrolet and GMC trucks by testing specific claims against traceable evidence. We do not treat a badge, decal, sales story, or repeated rumor as proof. Every conclusion is dated, sourced, and open to revision when stronger evidence appears.
The research process
Each project follows the same basic path, whether it begins with one photograph or a full archive of paperwork.
- Receive and preserve. We review submitted material privately, retain the original context, and separate preservation permission from publication permission.
- Define the claim. We turn a broad story into a precise question that evidence can actually answer.
- Check provenance. We examine who created the source, when it was created, how it was preserved, and whether it belongs to this vehicle.
- Compare independent evidence. Factory records, physical markings, dated photographs, ownership documents, and period literature are checked against one another.
- Assign a research status. The conclusion reflects both the strength of the evidence and any unresolved conflict or limitation.
- Cite and date the finding. A useful conclusion should show what supports it and when the evidence was assessed.
- Revise when warranted. New evidence can strengthen, weaken, or replace an earlier conclusion without erasing the research trail.
How evidence is weighed
This order is a guide, not an automatic verdict. Authenticity, context, independence, and relevance to the exact truck matter more than the label on a source.
- Vehicle-specific factory documents and physical markings tied to the truck being studied.
- Contemporary official records and literature created close to the vehicle’s production or conversion.
- Dated photographs and ownership records with a clear, credible chain of custody.
- Reliable secondary research that identifies its sources and distinguishes fact from interpretation.
- Owner recollections and community knowledge used as valuable leads, then tested against other evidence where possible.
The six research statuses
A status applies to a specific claim, not to the owner, contributor, or truck as a whole.
Verified
Reliable evidence directly and consistently supports the claim, with no material unresolved conflict.
Probable
The evidence strongly supports the claim, but a decisive record is missing or a meaningful limitation remains.
Unverified
The claim may be plausible or widely repeated, but there is not enough reliable evidence to support it.
Incorrect
Reliable evidence contradicts the claim.
Superseded
An earlier finding has been replaced by stronger or newer evidence. The previous conclusion remains in the revision history.
Not Assessable
The available material cannot answer the question because it is missing, unreadable, or inconclusive. This is not the same as saying the claim is false.
Corrections and revision history
Corrections are welcome. When evidence changes a finding, we preserve the original conclusion and its date, record what changed, explain why, and issue a revised status. We do not quietly rewrite the history of a conclusion.
If you spot an error or hold a document that challenges a published finding, send the source and as much provenance as you can. Disagreement alone does not settle a claim, but new evidence always deserves a fair review.
Privacy and contributor rights
- Submissions are reviewed privately.
- Contributors retain ownership of their photographs, documents, and stories.
- We do not publicly display, advertise with, or commercially reuse submitted material without specific permission.
- Personal information can be redacted before any approved publication.
- Permission to preserve material in the research archive is separate from permission to publish it.
