Where did Chevrolet put the Sport lettering? That depended on the pickup body. In Chevrolet’s 1980 pickup-section material, the Z77 Sport description puts it over the Fleetside’s rear wheel openings, while the separate Stepside description places it on the rear fenders. The two descriptions share a package name, but the details follow the shape of the truck.[1][2][3]
Start with the truck underneath
Both descriptions cover regular-cab pickups with a 117.5-inch wheelbase. Both start with the Scottsdale Model Option, then list Sport additions or substitutions. That starting point matters. These pages describe changes to an existing equipment package, rather than providing a complete specification for a truck.[1][2]
The shared ingredients give the two bodies a family resemblance. Chevrolet lists a chrome grille with black accents in its air openings, a bright hood ornament carrying the Sport name, and one rectangular headlamp on each side. Special ZY6 two-tone paint works with multitone decal striping. Even the bumpers belong to the color scheme: the front is painted the primary body color, the rear the secondary color. Inside, both lists call for color-keyed carpeting and extra-thick insulation across the floor.[1][2]
Follow the lettering around the body
The striping descriptions are where the two trucks become easiest to tell apart on paper. For the Fleetside, Chevrolet names the front fenders, cab and pickup body sides, hood and tailgate, placing the Sport lettering over the rear wheel openings. The Stepside description instead calls out its rear fenders, including lettering on those fenders.[1][2]
Other differences need a more careful reading. The Fleetside sheet explicitly deletes the body-side moldings normally included with Scottsdale. It mentions bright sill plates with the carpeting and black impact strips on both bumpers. The Stepside sheet specifies front-bumper impact strips, but does not repeat the molding-deletion or sill-plate wording.[1][2]
Those omissions are useful research questions, not permission to declare the unmentioned equipment absent. The pages also carry different dates: January 14, 1980 for Fleetside and October 26, 1979 for Stepside. Their wording should be compared as two dated descriptions, without assuming they were revised together or that one canceled the other.[1][2]
The color chart adds another layer
Below the Fleetside description, the exterior chart pairs Nordic Blue metallic with Midnight Black and describes the striping as “Blues.” Another row pairs Cardinal Red with Dark Carmine Red, with “Yellow to Orange” striping. These are named combinations in that dated chart, not colors inferred from its black-and-white scan.[1]
A separate seat-trim chart distinguishes cloth and vinyl treatments, and bench and bucket entries. It is another reminder that the Sport name alone does not specify an entire interior. The Stepside text refers back to the preceding page’s chart, but that reference should not be stretched into a complete seat, paint and stripe ordering guide for both bodies.[1][2]
For a surviving truck, these pages offer a useful starting point: compare its body style, lettering, finish and equipment with the correct dated description, then look for truck-specific documentation. A feature listed in Chevrolet’s literature does not, by itself, prove it was factory-installed on the truck in front of you.
About the source
The 1980 attribution comes from the pickup section’s explicit “ORIGINAL 1980” heading and the linked Sport pages, not merely the archive filename. The Sport leaves themselves do not explicitly state a model year or market. This account stays within their regular-cab, 117.5-inch-wheelbase scope; it does not establish every eligible model, engine or market.[1][2][3]
