A model year was not a single specification

A model-year label can feel like the final answer when you are researching an unusual truck. A GMC dealer letter dated February 23, 1986 gives a good reason to ask one more question: which version of the year’s program are you looking at?

The letter announces an enhanced Gold Medal Special Option Packages program. It replaces an earlier letter with the same number, DGL 105, dated September 11, 1985. Most usefully, it says a Work-Ready V8 package was added effective February 23, 1986.

For full-size pickups, the eligible-model passage names C/K1500–2500 Wideside and Fenderside regular cabs. A separate bullet specifically includes Fenderside pickups in the 1986 C/K1500–2500 packages. That is firmer evidence than assuming every pickup body shared every special package. It still does not tell us what each package contained.

Even the small print matters. The star beside the Work-Ready announcement leads to dealer credit conditions for certain inventory ordered before the announcement date. It is an allowance provision, not a statement that every truck built before that date lacked the equipment.

This photograph preserves a useful moment in the program’s history. The referenced attachments and earlier letter are missing, and the sales market is not explicitly identified. It can support the dated announcement and the pickup scope printed here, but not a complete option list or proof of how an individual truck left the factory.

Check the reference

  • Original source: GMC Dealer General Letter 105, February 23, 1986, “Enhanced 1986 Gold Medal Special Option Packages Program,” unnumbered introductory leaf.
  • Original photographed letter.
  • Listing that provides the photo. Its album title is not proof that all listed years or attachments are present.
  • The image filename begins “1985,” but the letter itself is dated 1986. Likewise, GMT 220 Rev.12/80 is the letter-form revision, not this bulletin’s issue date.
  • The listing’s other photograph shows DGL 273, July 21, 1986, pages 4–5. It is not an attachment to DGL 105.

The star beside the Work-Ready announcement leads to the allowance conditions. Here YK1 identifies an allowance; this leaf does not establish a package ordering code.

The allowance footnote

The Work-Ready footnote concerns full or partial YK1 allowances for vehicles in dealer inventory on or after February 23, 1986 that had been ordered before that date. Dealers had to apply for credit. The credit was based on the dealer price of the package’s no-charge options, less the dealer price of any of those options absent from the vehicle. Complete application instructions were in the referenced Guidelines, which have not been recovered. These inventory and order conditions do not establish a vehicle build-date cutoff.
