An upholstery code needs its year

Found XRR1 in a piece of old truck paperwork? That is a promising clue, but keep the model year beside it.

In Chevrolet’s 1976 Crew/Bonus chart, XRR1 sits in the Red column for a Custom Vinyl bench seat. The material key calls that vinyl “Buffalo Hide Vinyl.” Open the 1980 Bonus/Crew chart and XRR1 appears again, this time under Carmine, with its material key reading “Brahman Grain Vinyl.” The familiar code comes with different printed descriptions. 1976 chart, 1980 chart.

Before treating a code as the whole answer, find the chart for the right year and cab, then read the material key alongside it. That extra context helps keep a plausible identification from becoming more certain than the paperwork allows.

Evidence notes

  • The 1976 source is printed Pickup page 13, dated January 16, 1976, actual PDF page 16. The XRR1 cells are in the Scottsdale and Silverado Custom Vinyl rows, both using material key W.
  • The 1980 source is printed Pickup page R, dated August 3, 1979, actual PDF page 39. Its Custom Vinyl row uses material key W, with X marks in the Scottsdale and Silverado columns. The 1979 leaf date belongs to the 1980-model-year kit.
  • Both charts retain their combined Crew/Bonus cab scope. Neither establishes a particular sales market here.
  • This comparison establishes printed descriptions, not an exact changeover date, physical material composition or the upholstery installed on an individual truck. “Buffalo Hide Vinyl” is the source’s name, not a claim of leather construction.
