Comparing a 1979 Chevrolet interior with a 1980 one? The dated two-tone charts for regular-cab pickups show what stayed the same and what changed. Keep this comparison with those trucks: it does not cover GMCs, crew cabs or upholstery choices in every market.

Scottsdale bucket seats were already listed for 1979

The 1979 Chevrolet chart marks Custom Vinyl Bucket seats as available with Scottsdale Z62, Cheyenne Z84 and Silverado YE9. The corresponding 1980 chart lists the same three trim packages. Scottsdale bucket-seat availability should not be described as a new feature for 1980. Sources: 1979 factory information kit, PDF page 75, printed Pickup page Q, February 16, 1979; 1980 kit, PDF page 38, printed Pickup page Q, August 3, 1979.

The bucket-seat row carries ordering codes XMD4, XMG4, XMR4 and XMC4 in both charts. The corresponding two-tone interior columns are Blue and Mystic, Green and Mystic, Carmine and Mystic, and Camel and Mystic. This continuity matters when comparing option lists: a repeated seat code does not, by itself, establish identical upholstery material across model years. Sources: 1979 chart and 1980 chart.

Two separate material changes

The footnotes identify a vinyl change and a cloth change:

  • For 1979, seat-trim code W is Oxen Hide Vinyl; for 1980, W is Brahman Grained Vinyl.
  • For 1979, seat-trim code D is Ribbed Pattern Velour Cloth; for 1980, D is Hobnail Pattern Velour Cloth.

These are separate material descriptions, not alternative names for one change. In these two-tone charts, the Custom Cloth entry is a bench seat, while Custom Vinyl has both bench and bucket entries. The cloth-pattern change should not be presented as a cloth bucket-seat introduction. Sources: seat-trim rows and footnotes in the 1979 chart and 1980 chart.

How to use the charts

Both leaves are titled for two-tone interiors in regular-cab pickups. Both also explain that the displayed exterior/interior combinations are Chevrolet's recommendations and that an exterior color could be ordered with an otherwise available interior color or seat trim. The color-grid markings should therefore not be treated as an absolute ban on every unmarked pairing. That note does not remove the seat and trim-package availability limits. Sources: notes above the 1979 chart and 1980 chart.

These are dated literature comparisons: February 16, 1979 for the 1979 leaf and August 3, 1979 for the 1980 leaf. They do not establish a production-line changeover date, authenticate the upholstery now fitted to a particular truck, or prove identical availability in every market. The selected chart leaves do not independently establish a sales market. Single-tone interiors have separate charts and are outside this comparison.

Bottom line

The supported transition is from one named vinyl material and one named cloth pattern to their respective 1980 descriptions. The same evidence shows Scottsdale custom-vinyl bucket seats on both sides of that transition.
